When is SEO the wrong investment?
SEO is wrong when nobody searches for what you sell, when you need work this month rather than in six, when the business is already at capacity, or when the money would do more elsewhere — answering the phone, asking for reviews, following up quotes. A provider willing to say so is worth more than one that is not.
When it is premature
You cannot answer the phone. SEO produces calls. Calls into voicemail produce nothing except a competitor's booking. Fix answering first — it costs nothing and it improves every channel.
Nobody follows up enquiries. The same argument. More enquiries into a process that drops them makes the loss larger.
Your Google Business Profile is incomplete. Free, faster, and larger effect for local service work. Do that before paying for anything.
You have almost no reviews. Reviews affect whether you appear, whether you are clicked and whether you are called. Rankings without them convert poorly.
You need revenue in three weeks. SEO will not deliver it. Ads might.
When it is the wrong channel entirely
Nobody searches for what you sell. Some services genuinely have no meaningful search volume, particularly new categories or work bought entirely through referral and trade relationships.
Check before assuming. If the search volume is not there, no amount of optimisation creates it.
Your work comes from relationships. Some commercial and trade businesses get nearly everything from a handful of long-standing contacts. Search may be a marginal addition rather than a growth channel.
Your area is too small. A business serving one small town may exhaust the available search demand quickly. That is not failure — it is a ceiling, and the growth has to come from elsewhere.
You cannot serve more work. If you are at capacity, spending to generate demand you cannot fulfil produces late arrivals and poor reviews. Raise prices or hire first.
When it is right
- People search for your service in your area, in meaningful numbers
- You can answer and follow up
- You have capacity, or can add it
- You can wait several months for the return
- Your competitors rank and you do not
The honest test
Search your main service plus your city, from a phone, in your service area. If plenty of businesses appear and you do not, there is demand and you are missing it.
If almost nothing appears, either the demand is not there or you have found an opportunity — and which of the two it is, is worth checking properly before spending.
What to do instead, if it is premature
Profile, reviews, answering the phone, following up. All free or nearly so, and all of them make SEO work better when you do start.
