What is search intent?

Search intent is what someone is actually trying to accomplish when they type a query. Two searches can contain the same words and want completely different things, and matching the intent behind a search matters more for ranking than matching the words in it.

What is search intent?

Search intent is the goal behind a query — what the person wants to happen next. "AC repair" and "how does an AC compressor work" both concern air conditioning, but one wants a technician today and the other wants an explanation. Matching search intent matters more for ranking than matching the words in the query.

Frequently asked questions

What are the types of search intent?

Informational, navigational, commercial and transactional. For a local service business, commercial and transactional searches produce the work; informational ones build authority.

How do I work out the intent of a search term?

Search it and look at what already ranks. Search engines have far more data than you do about what satisfies a query, and the current results are their answer to that question.

Why does intent matter more than keywords?

A page with the right phrase but the wrong purpose does not hold a position — visitors arrive, find it is not what they wanted, and leave. A page that genuinely satisfies the intent ranks for phrasings nobody targeted.

Can one page serve two intents?

It usually serves neither well. If someone wants to speak to you, build a service page with a phone number. If they want to understand something, write an explanation. Splitting them works better.

Want this looked at for your business?

Twenty minutes on the phone usually finds the one thing holding the number back. James answers himself.
